Bears could reunite Ben Johnson with former Pro Bowl left tackle

Major news dropped in the NFC North that could have a direct impact on the Chicago Bears this offseason, as it was announced that longtime Detroit Lions left tackle Taylor Decker and the team are parting ways.

Decker made the announcement on social media and will immediately hit free agency, paving the way for a potential reunion with Bears head coach Ben Johnson.

Decker had spent his entire career with the Lions dating back to 2016, when he was the 16th overall pick. He was a big piece on Detroit’s offensive line during Johnson’s three seasons as offensive coordinator. Chicago has a need for left tackle after losing rookie Ozzy Trapilo to a ruptured patella tendon, which is expected to keep him out for most of the 2026 season.

A reunion with Johnson and the 32-year old former Pro Bowler would help fill the void created by Trapilo’s injury and could help further the production of Chicago’s offensive line in bringing in a familiar face to Johnson’s system. In 2025, Decker allowed just two sacks and committed five penalties across 894 offensive snaps played, production that is hard to find on the open market.

The Bears have a need at left tackle and center positions on the offensive line due to the injury and sudden retirement of veteran center Drew Dalman earlier this week. With free agency just days away, Chicago is starting to see more opportunities where they can plug in and fill the holes on their roster before the frenzy officially begins.
