The 33-year-old woman whose body was found floating in the Indian River Lagoon in Fort Pierce on May 12 has been identified.
Fort Pierce resident Chelsea Nicole Williams was identified as the person found just before 8 a.m. by Sea Tow personnel in the water between the north and south bridges, according to a May 13 news release from the Fort Pierce Police Department.
Williams was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release. Crews from the St. Lucie County sheriff’s marine unit and the St. Lucie County Fire District helped with the recovery.
Her body was taken to the Museum Pointe Park boat ramp, where the investigation was turned over to police, according to the release.
There were no apparent signs of trauma or indications of foul play, said Maj. Michael Santiago. Officials are waiting for the medical examiner’s office to perform an autopsy to determine a cause and manner of death.
Santiago said an officer recognized the woman as someone they made contact with May 11 at Jaycee Park. He said that call was for a disturbance where people reportedly complained a woman was being rude and cursing.
When officers arrived, the woman was standing in the water and appeared to be enjoying herself, Santiago said. She told investigators she wasn’t bothering anyone and was minding her own business.
Meanwhile, the people who called police had left the beach, Santiago said. The woman didn’t look to be in distress or need assistance.
“There was no crime committed and she didn’t appear to need any help,” Santiago said.
