Winn-Dixie store in Palm Beach Gardens to close doors this spring

A longtime supermarket anchor of a Palm Beach Gardens shopping plaza will soon close its doors.

Winn-Dixie confirmed it will shutter its store in the Gardens Park Plaza at Northlake Boulevard and Military Trail in mid-April. A spokesperson said an official closing date will be announced when details are final.

“Transformation sometimes requires difficult decisions, and in certain cases this can mean closing a store when it’s necessary to support the future success of our company,” Winn-Dixie said in a prepared statement.

The company said employees will be given the opportunity to apply for open positions at nearby stores, including the four others it has in Palm Beach County. It will offer severance packages to eligible employees.

It was not immediately clear what will replace the Palm Beach Gardens Winn-Dixie, or when. A city spokesperson said no one has submitted plans or requested building permits for the site.

Winn-Dixie has closed multiple stores across Florida in recent months, with some locations becoming Aldi outlets. In 2024, Aldi purchased Southeastern Grocers, then the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys supermarkets, as part of its plan to add more than 800 stores nationwide by 2028. Aldi sold Southeastern Grocers nearly a year later, but will continue converting some Winn Dixie locations into Aldi outlets.

The Palm Beach Gardens site has not been mentioned as a location that will become an Aldi, and a Winn-Dixie spokesperson said the store’s closure is not related to conversations with Aldi.

Aldi has two locations in northern Palm Beach County, including one in Jupiter and the other on North Congress Avenue in Lake Park, about 2 miles southeast of Gardens Park Plaza.

Presidente Supermarkets, one of South Florida’s top Hispanic grocery chains, also has bought other Winn-Dixie stores as its footprint as grown to more than 45 stores across the state.
