Winn-Dixie on Chaffee Road set to close, become an Aldi

A Westside Jacksonville grocery store is preparing to shut its doors as part of a broader shift reshaping the region’s supermarket landscape.

Winn-Dixie at 703 Chaffee Road S. is expected to close in late April with plans already underway to convert the location into a new Aldi store.

The move is part of Aldi’s ongoing strategy to expand across Florida by transforming former Winn-Dixie locations.

Why is the Winn-Dixie on Chaffee Road closing?

The Chaffee Road store is closing to make way for an Aldi conversion, according to company officials and city permitting records.

The closure is part of a larger strategic transition following Aldi’s acquisition of hundreds of stores from Winn-Dixie’s parent company.

Where is the closing Winn-Dixie located?

The store sits at 703 Chaffee Road S., just south of Interstate 10 on Jacksonville’s Westside.

The location has operated since 1999 and has long served nearby residential communities and commuters traveling along the I-10 corridor.

What will replace the Winn-Dixie?

The building will be redeveloped into an Aldi grocery store, known for its smaller footprint and discount-focused model.

Plans show the roughly 47,000-square-foot Winn-Dixie will be divided, with Aldi occupying a reduced portion of the space.

The remaining square footage is expected to be repurposed for another tenant in the future.

When will the new Aldi open?

An exact opening date for the Aldi has not yet been announced.

However, construction permits have already been issued by the city of Jacksonville, and work is expected to begin shortly after the Winn-Dixie closes.

Based on similar conversions across Florida, openings typically follow several months after closure.

What does this mean for Jacksonville grocery shoppers?

The change reflects a broader shift in how grocery chains are competing in Northeast Florida.

Aldi has been rapidly expanding, with plans to convert about 220 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations nationwide as part of a multi-year rollout.

As a result, long-time Winn-Dixie customers may see fewer traditional full-service grocery options in some neighborhoods.

Are more Winn-Dixie stores in Jacksonville closing?

Yes, the Chaffee Road location is one of several in Northeast Florida either closing or slated for conversion.

Additional Jacksonville-area Winn-Dixie stores are part of phased closures tied to Aldi’s expansion strategy.

Not all locations will convert, though, and some Winn-Dixie stores are expected to remain open depending on market conditions.

What should customers do before the store closes?

Customers can expect typical pre-closure changes in the final weeks, including gradual inventory reduction, possible clearance pricing on select items and limited product availability as the closing date approaches.

The closure of the Winn-Dixie on Chaffee Road marks another step in Aldi’s aggressive expansion into Jacksonville and across Florida.
