Few players have made a stronger first impression in Tampa Bay than Lavonte David, and ESPN believes no Buccaneer has ever enjoyed a better training camp.
In a team-by-team look at each franchise’s ultimate training camp winner, NFL Nation’s Jenna Laine selected David for the Buccaneers, pointing to the remarkable impact he made immediately after arriving as a second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
According to Laine, David’s rise was so rapid that he was already working with the first-team defense during mandatory minicamp. His instincts, especially in pass coverage, and his tackling ability quickly drew comparisons to Buccaneers legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Derrick Brooks.
That momentum carried into the preseason, where David opened his NFL career with two tackles, a pass breakup, and an interception against the Miami Dolphins. By the start of the regular season, he had beaten out veteran Adam Hayward for the starting weakside linebacker job.
David spent all 14 of his NFL seasons with Tampa Bay, becoming a 12-time team captain, a three-time All-Pro selection, and one of the cornerstones of the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV championship team. Along the way, he established himself as one of the greatest linebackers in franchise history and one of the most consistent defenders of his generation.
While training camp often creates excitement around rookies and breakout candidates, David’s performance in the summer of 2012 proved to be the beginning of a legendary career. More than a decade later, his immediate impact remains the standard for every young Buccaneer who arrives in Tampa Bay looking to earn a starting role.
