Where we ate this week: An under-appreciated Mexican gem in Eustis

On my way home from the American Legion in Mount Dora for the Mabel Norris Reese honors last week, I picked up a chicken chimichanga meal and Tacos al Pastor at La Perla Tapatía in Eustis.

Both meals were fresh and delicious. The grilled chicken in my chimichanga was a nice change of pace from the usual factory-shredded meat. The soft corn taco tortillas, Danny said, had a homemade, authentic appeal, and he enjoyed the sauce and generous portions.

Specialty dishes include Fogon Tapatía (served in a sizzling pot), torta ahogada (a smothered sandwich) authentic ceviche and molcajetes, a dish incorporating a traditional Mexican mortar and pestle carved from volcanic rock, used both as a tool for grinding spices and salsas and as a heat-retaining serving dish for bubbling stews of meat and vegetables.

The spot is colorful, elegant and bold all at once. Looking forward to dining in next time.

A not-quite hidden gem but under-appreciated, maybe because of its non-pedestrian-friendly location. Still, La Perla offers authentic Jalisco-style cuisine, including customer-raved birria tacos, guacamole and margaritas.
