Miami is on to the Cotton Bowl! The Hurricanes’ 10-3 win at Texas A&M in the College Football Playoff’s first round lines them up to face defending champion Ohio State in the quarterfinals.
Miami (11-2) and Ohio State haven’t squared off since 2011. The two programs with 14 national championship claims between them most famously met in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, when the Buckeyes beat the reigning champion Hurricanes in overtime thanks to a controversial pass-interference call.
The Buckeyes (12-1) opened their title defense with a tightly fought win over Texas, then bulldozed the opposition until losing a battle of undefeated teams with Indiana in the Big Ten championship game. It shapes up as a clash between two of the best defenses in the country with Ohio State’s unit sporting three first-team AP All-Americans in safety Caleb Downs, defensive tackle Kayden McDonald and linebacker Arvell Reese and Miami touting second-teamer Rueben Bain and his edge-rush partner Akheem Mesidor.
