The sky is no longer falling on Florida State football. Sorrow over last season’s unprecedented collapse has turned into joy and hopes for the College Football Playoff after the Seminoles upset then-No. 8 Alabama to kick off 2025.
This week, FSU hosts East Texas A&M, an FCS team formerly known as Texas A&M-Commerce. The Seminoles dominated Alabama 31-17 in the season opener behind new quarterback Tommy Castellanos, who threw for 152 yards and led the team with 78 rushing yards and a touchdown. New offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s punishing run game put up 230 yards with Micahi Danzy, Gavin Sawchuk and Caziah Holmes also scoring.
The Lions are playing their second straight game against an ACC opponent, losing 42-13 at SMU last week. Eric Rodriguez and Will Madonna combined to pass for 244 yards with Rodriguez running for the team’s only touchdown.

Florida State fans know not to take visiting FCS teams lightly. The Seminoles famously lost on a Hail Mary in 2021 to Jacksonville State, then saw their CFP hopes evaporate (rightly or not) in 2023 when Jordan Travis suffered a season-ending injury against North Alabama. That said, it’s hard to think this FSU could suffer from fate bad enough to blow this kind of momentum. Tommy Castellanos is likely due for some regression — the offense slowed down enough to let Alabama briefly get back into the game — but this should be a cakewalk.
