What's the difference between Winn-Dixie and Aldi? Florida Winn-Dixie locations converting

If you don’t have an Aldi near you yet, you likely will soon.

Six new Florida locations of the discount grocery store chain have opened or are scheduled to open by the end of July, in addition to the 22 Aldi locations that have already opened in the state this year. Nationwide, the company plans to open 225 new store locations in 2025 – the most they’ve ever opened in a single year.

The no-frills German grocery chain bought the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets in 2024 and sold most of them back this year, but they’re still moving forward with the conversions that were already in progress, along with opening some new stores.

Most of the new Aldi stores in Florida are being converted from Winn-Dixie and Harveys locations, but there are a lot of big differences between the grocery stores.

Here’s a list of new Aldi locations in Florida and some of the key differences between Winn-Dixie and Aldi grocery stores.

Is Winn-Dixie turning into Aldi?

Yes and no. Some Winn-Dixie locations are converting to Aldi stores, but not all.

In March of 2024, Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers Inc (SEG), the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, and announced an ambitious five-year plan to add 800 stores nationwide through new stores and store conversions.

In less than a year, Aldi sold most of the stores it bought back to a consortium of private investors led by SEG president Anthony Hucker, but kept the stores where conversion plans were already underway.

On Aldi’s grand opening page, the chain lists 21 new locations, many of them former Winn-Dixie sites:

Several more Winn-Dixie conversions are still ongoing, including locations in Sebastian and Vero Beach. scheduled for early 2026. The company also continues to open new Aldi stores, such as the Port Orange store, which is set to open on July 31.

What is the difference between Winn-Dixie and Aldi? How converting Winn-Dixie stores will change

The biggest difference between Winn-Dixie stores and German-owned Aldi stores is their size and selection. Winn-Dixie stores, like Publix, Harveys, Walmart or nearly any other supermarket, sell a wide variety of name-brand products, offering everything from robust Kellogg ’s-filled cereal aisles, to delis with fresh-cut meats and pharmacies or liquor stores.

But Aldi stores are a discount grocery chain that mainly offers Aldi-brand products, with very few name-brand products and no deli or adjoining pharmacy or liquor store. The pruning of services that most grocery store chains offer makes Aldi stores much smaller in size.

Here’s a breakdown of some of the key differences between the two:
