Stephen Jones’ whirlwind run with the Miami Marlins took another turn this week.
The former Chiles High and Samford pitcher joined the Marlins on Thursday for their home game against the Baltimore Orioles, marking his first promotion to the major leagues after eight seasons in the minors.
The 28-year-old right hander did not appear in the game and was designated for assignment Friday, May 8.
Jones will now either be traded, placed on outright waivers or released. However, the Marlins are expected to retain Jones and assign him to either Triple-A Jacksonville (Jumbo Shrimp) or Double-A Pensacola (Blue Wahoos).
Jones, who signed with Miami as a free agent in the offseason, was one of six former Pensacola players called up by the Marlins over a five-day stretch.
He made 10 appearances this season, all in relief, posting a 2-1 record with a 3.24 ERA.
Jones is the second player from Chiles to reach the major leagues, joining former teammate and pitcher Bowden Francis of Toronto.
