What is the best time to visit Florida? Here's what to consider

Florida is always in season.

But whether you get breezy beach days or blazing heat and afternoon downpours depends on when you book that trip.

Every year, the Sunshine State welcomes more and more tourists. According to the state, Florida welcomed more than 143 million visitors in 2025, the highest number ever recorded. That includes over 131 million domestic travelers.

But that doesn’t include Floridians who like to travel within the state, from the pine flatlands of the north to the muggy swamps of the south.

With all these visitors and locals alike soaking up the sun at our beaches, theme parks and nature parks, there has to be a “perfect time” to visit, right? Well, the answer to that question might not be so easy or straightforward.

So, we asked an expert.

Is there a best time to visit Florida?

Sort of … not really. But for a good reason.

Mostly because Florida is open for business every day, according to Dr. Alan Fyall, associate dean of Academic Affairs and the Visit Orlando Endowed Chair of Tourism Marketing at the Rosen College of Hospitality Management, University of Central Florida.

Not only is Florida in general busy 365 (sometimes 366) days a year, but its hot spots and iconic destinations are also open year-round. Fyall highlights the state’s diverse entertainment and activity options, going far beyond the coast and theme park offerings.

“You can come here for the first time, you may do a theme park or two, but then you realize very quickly there’s other things to do as well, so it just keeps rippling,” Fyall told the USA TODAY NETWORK-Florida. “That’s why it’s so successful because it constantly reinvents itself. Florida does a really good job on that.”

It doesn’t matter whether it’s the dog days of summer or the dead of winter; visitors can expect an array of activities anytime they visit the state.

Does the ‘best time’ vary across different parts of Florida?

Florida doesn’t have a straight “best time” to visit, but are there better times to visit different parts of the state? Maybe you should avoid Orlando during the holidays or make it a priority to visit Miami in the summer.

Well, Fyall gives a similar answer as before: it’s similar year-round.

“It’s pretty universal because essentially the weather’s mostly good all year round. Obviously, you have the issues of hurricanes and what have you in the summer, but that doesn’t happen every year,” Fyall said, noting how visitors can check out any of the state’s springs or go to the theme parks at any point of the year.

That doesn’t mean there are no “peak seasons” when things get busier than usual. For example, in Orlando, it’s usually the winter holiday season that sees an uptick in activity. Various beaches around the state also see a swell of activity during spring break.

“To be honest, it’s never not busy, it’s just varying degrees of busyness is probably the best way to describe it,” Fyall said. ” … As I say, you can’t attract that many million visitors and really have a quiet spell.”

There are even some positives for visiting the state during its peak times, such as summer. He especially highlights the atmosphere and energy, such as attending a sports game or going to a holiday party at the theme parks.

But there are some sacrifices you might have to make, such as prioritizing certain activities and what is important to you. That’s why planning is key.

“It’s all about time and disposable income … the time that you’ve got, the distances you’re traveling, and then the in-between time, eat and drink, so you really need to think very carefully,” Fyall said. “Otherwise, you cram too much in, and you just can’t do it all. And that’s when you get stressed.”

Is summer really the worst time to visit Florida?

Ask a local when to visit Florida, and many will offer the same piece of advice: “Do not go in summer.” Is the notion that it’s a bad idea to vacation in summer fair?

Fyall says it depends; many only have the option to visit during our sweltering summer season. Especially those with kids in school or those attending college.

“Many people do come in the summer still because that’s when the school vacations are, so you have to remember, although some people might rather come at a slightly cooler time in the year, they can’t because the schools aren’t off,” Fyall said. “School vacation patterns, particularly for international visitors, are very, very, very defined.”

And when it comes to weather, Florida’s summers get a bad rep, particularly for its heat, but Fyall notes it gets hot everywhere in the summer. But unlike other parts of the country, or even the globe, Florida is built for the heat.

“The infrastructure here, the hotels, the resorts, the pools on the coast, it accommodates the heat better by a long way,” Fyall says.

Is there a cheaper time to visit Florida?

What is considered “cheap” is highly subjective, depending on which part of Florida you’re visiting and your goals.

If there is one, Fyall says it could be summer because of weather impacts such as heat and hurricanes, as well as special deals enticing those to visit during the season. But he focuses instead on how travelers can enjoy Florida at many different price points.

“It’s a rare destination. (Florida has) got that diversity of attraction, but it’s got the diversity and the breadth of spending points, so you can choose your spending point,” Fyall said, giving an example of how travelers can opt for an Airbnb over a major hotel. “That’s what Florida offers that many states don’t, so that’s part of its special DNA.”

How should travelers think about hurricane season?

There is an elephant in the room to address when vacationing in Florida from June to October: hurricane season.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30. Tropical activity picks up between mid-August and mid-October, with the peak of the season occurring Sept. 10. Luckily, Fyall says visitors do not need to avoid Florida during these months or be overly cautious when planning their trips.

“I don’t think visitors worry too much, actually, because Florida has got a really good track record of looking after people,” Fyall says. ” … All the emergency and resilience planning in Florida, when you live here for a while, you realize how impressive it is.”

Do Floridians travel differently from tourists?

Yes, especially since we have an advantage over those outside the state — we’re already experts on our own state. We know the best times to visit and how to save money when doing so.

“They got the best of both worlds because they live here all the time and they can take maximum benefit of the slightly cheaper period of the resident discounts, ” Fyall said. “When you’re a resident of a tourist area, you tend to know very well the times when you can and can’t go in terms of volume and what have you.”

What should travelers keep in mind when choosing when to visit Florida?

Now we know that there really isn’t a particularly good or bad time to visit Florida. So what should visitors take into account when planning their trips?

“Best advice, take a deep look at everything that Florida has to offer in all its different parts, be it south, central, north, because I think the diversity really does surprise people. They realize Florida is not a one-dimensional state,” Fyall said.

“There’s so much character in the different parts of the state. The geography is far different from what people realize. And you can have natural fun, man-made fun, and eat fantastic meals.”
