Vote Now: Spring athletes join winter performers in Tremdmous 10 poll

Spring sports is beginning and there are baseball and track performers being recognized in this week’s Tremendous 10 poll sponsored by Central Florida Behavioral Health Network, but winter sports athletes aren’t going quietly. At last week’s girls weightlifting state meets, Haines City’s Divineya Smith became the second state champion in Polk County history. And clutch performances from Lakeland Christian and Victory Christian soccer players that sent their respective team to the state tournament.

In last week’s poll, Lakeland Christian’s Katie Coleman finished with 51.4 percent of the vote, followed by Bartow’s Jay Crossley (30.7 percent) and McKeel’s Abi Lovelady (10.1 percent).

Nominations for the Tremendous 10 poll can be made weekly to roy.fuoco@theleder.com by 9 a.m. every Monday. This week’s poll will be open until noon on Thursday.

1 Haines City senior Divineya Smith (girls weightlifting) lifted a personal-record 225 pounds on her final lift on the bench press and finished with a total lift of 425 pounds to win Traditional in the unlimited weight class at the Class 3A state meet. She became the second girls weightlifting state champion in Polk County history. She also finished fifth in Olympic.

2 Victory Christian senior goalkeeper Chiara Domico (girls soccer) recorded 17 saves in a brilliant effort to help lead the Storm to a 1-0 victory over All saints in the regional finals to advance to the state tournament for the first time in school history.

3 Lakeland Christian freshman Allie Williams (girls soccer) scored both goals in the Vikings’ 2-1 victory over Berkeley Prep in the regional finals. She also had a goal and an assist in the semifinals and now has 21 goals and 15 assists to lead or be tied for the team lead in both categories.

4 Auburndale senior Zylia Parker (girls weighlifting) finished second in Traditional and second in Olympic in the 154-pound weight class at the Class 2A state meet.

5 Winter Haven senior Olivia Celiscar (girls weightlifting) finished second in Traditional to Smith and third in Olympic at the Class 3A state meet.

6 Lake Wales junior Abby Childress (girls weightlifting) finished second in Olympic in the unlimited weight class at the Class 2A state meet,

7 Lakeland junior Cooper Carbonara (baseball) struck out 11 batters and walked two batters in five innings in the Dreadnaughts’ 5-4 victory over Ridge Community.

8 Santa Fe Catholic senior Jameson McGuire (baseball) got off to a fast start by pitching a five-inning, one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts in the season opener. He also went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and home run with three RBIs.

9 Victory Christian senior Jarell Paul (boys track and field) won two events at the Bob English Invitational that had more than 25 teams competing. He set a personal record by winning the 110-meter hurdles in 15.77 seconds and took first in the triple jump with a mark of 44-07.50, just off another personal record.

10 Lakeland senior DJ Dobie (boys track and field) fan 10.49 seconds to win the 100 at the Harry Woodell Invitational.
