VOTE: Florida Times-Union High School Boys Athlete of the Week, Sept. 8

The results are in.

Wolfson cross country runner Mason Marello is the new Florida Times-Union Boys Athlete of the Week for Northeast Florida high school sports for the 2025-26 season, covering the week of Aug. 25-30, 2025 in the Jacksonville area.

The senior ran away from the pack to place first in the Wolfson Home Meet at Southpoint Community Church.

He placed first in a vote of top Northeast Florida performers that included Sebastian Guio (Episcopal swimming), Leonard Holton (Old Plank Christian football), Miguel Jimenez (First Coast football), Dmytro Kulyk (Nease golf), Mason Putnal (Fletcher diving) and Brysen Wright (Mandarin football).

This week’s Boys Athlete of the Week vote

It’s time to vote for Florida Times-Union’s boys High School Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 2-6, 2025.

The Times-Union gathers nominees from scores, stats and nominations e-mailed to the sports desk during the week by coaches across Northeast Florida. Coaches can e-mail these stats and scores to preps@jacksonville.com. Deadline to receive nominations is 7 p.m. Saturdays.

This week’s voting begins Monday morning and closes at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour. Vote at jacksonville.com/sports.

We reserve the right to disqualify a candidate or declare a vote “no contest” if tampering such as bots or offering to pay for voting is evident. Please respect the integrity of the vote the way these athletes respect the integrity of the game.

Sean Cunningham, Providence cross country

The junior ran 15:36 for a third-place individual finish at the Florida Horse Park Invitational in Ocala.

Cooper Franklin, Ponte Vedra golf

The senior shot 67 to lead the Sharks to the team title at the Central Florida Prep Invitational in Orlando.

Matthew Ishee, Nease cross country

The sophomore won individual and team championships with a personal-best 16:08 at the Run Matanzas Invitational in Palm Coast.

Brody Jennings, Mandarin football

The senior cornerback intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown in a 42-0 shutout of Sandalwood.

Josh Stafford, West Nassau football

The sophomore defensive back scored both punt return and kickoff return touchdowns in a 48-12 win over Lake Weir.

Drew Watson, Stanton swimming

The senior won the 100 and 200-yard freestyle races and two relays as the Blue Devils won a dual meet with First Coast.

Somourian Wingo, St. Augustine football

The senior receiver caught 11 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, and made the game-sealing pass breakup on defense, to defeat Bolles 40-35.
