Police investigate fatal crash in Fort Pierce that caused U.S. 1 closure

FORT PIERCE − A man using a wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle July 3 in the area of U.S. 1 and Virginia Avenue, according to Fort Pierce Police.

Police at 6 a.m. went to the intersection, and a preliminary investigation determined a man using a wheelchair was struck by a truck while he was crossing U.S. 1 in a crosswalk, police spokesperson Juliana Walker said.

Walker stated the truck traveled south on U.S. 1 as the man using the wheelchair crossed the roadway from west to east.

The man using the wheelchair was taken to a local hospital where he died, she stated.

Police did not immediately identify the man as investigators work to notify his family.

The northbound and southbound lanes of U.S. 1 were closed following the crash, though opened by as early as 8:15 a.m.
