Trader Joe’s to anchor tenant plaza on West Palm Beach southern border

Trader Joe’s has revealed the worst-kept open secret on West Palm Beach’s South End: the future location of its newest South Florida grocery store.

Six months after confirming its plans for a store in West Palm Beach, the California-based grocery chain says the location will be an 8-story apartment-and-retail complex under construction at 8111 S. Dixie Highway.

Trader Joe’s will be the anchor tenant at the plaza on the city’s border with Lake Worth Beach, just south of a Winn-Dixie store in the Palm Coast Plaza.

The complex is now listed on the company’s website as the location of Palm Beach County’s fifth Trader Joe’s.

No timeline for when it opens is provided other than an assurance that it is “coming soon!” A company spokesperson said via email that “we do not yet have an estimated opening date to share.”

The site has been widely acknowledged as a future Trader Joe’s location for months despite the lack of official confirmation.

In August a company spokesperson said a store was in the works in the West Palm Beach area but declined to reveal the location.

City leaders have been advocating for the company to open a store in West Palm Beach for more than a decade, including a marketing campaign by the Downtown Development Authority called “What would I trade for Trader Joe’s?”

The county’s first Trader Joe’s opened in Wellington in 2014. It has since opened stores in Boca Raton, Delray Beach and Palm Beach Gardens.

The mixed-use complex where the store will open had promised an “urban specialty grocer” as a main tenant.

The development will include the 8-story Sound Apartments with 358 units, shops and 15,000-square-feet for a grocery store.
