REGION 1A-3: ENGLEWOOD — St. John Neumann jumped out to a quick lead and went on to defeat Lemon Bay, 49-16, to advance to the Class 1A-3 dual wrestling regional finals.
The Celtics won six of the first seven matches and cruised past the Manta Rays from there. The results were somewhat surprising for Neumann coach Blaine Ison.
“I think the score makes it look a lot worse than it is,” Ison said. “Lemon Bay has a very solid team. We knew going into it that there was going to be a lot of close matches that could come down to the end. Our kids were able to fight through,so we were able to win those swing matches. So the score looks a lot worse, but there was a lot of battles won individually, and that’s what made the whole team take care of itself.”
James Sanders started it off for the Celtics with a pin of Memphis Carpenter in the 113-pound weight class, but Logan Dean returned the favor for Lemon Bay with a pin of Miles Merves at 120.
Neumann then won the next five duals to open up a 30-6 lead. Erik Perez and Jalal Naghib pinned their Lemon Bay opponents, then Russ Haas edged out Tristan Nee, 8-7, at 138. Lincoln Sledzianowski followed with a technical fall win over Justus Hatch, and William Buckley won a major 16-5 decision over Elliot Sear at 150.
The Mantas then got a pin from Jason Perez-Mesa over Richmerlens Cliferme and a 13-9 decision by Evan Saunoris over Braeden Mills to briefly close the gap. Johnathan Moder won a major decision at 175 over Carter Shaffer, 12-3, for Neumann, and the Manta’s Atticus Randall defeated Reyvis Soto, 9-6, to bring the score to 34-20.
The Celtics closed out the match with an 8-5 decision by Hunter Born at 215 and pins by Gabe Harris at 285 and Greyson McDonald at 106.
“We knew we were going to go into a hostile environment,” Ison said. “They’re home with their fans. There were going to be a lot of matches that we were going to have to gut out, and I’m super proud of these boys.”
The Celtics advanced with a 72-6 win over Lakewood in the quarterfinals while Lemon Bay was defeating Aubrey Rogers, 46-26.
Neumann now goes to the first round of the state tournament, which is the regional final match next Friday, in hopes of advancing to the state semifinals on Saturday.
The Celtics will look to improve on their state runner-up finish from last year, when they lost to Mater Lakes Academy.
“That’s what we’re hoping for,” Ison said. “We want a revenge match.”
