Sophia Reed’s first college golf tournament was one to remember.
Playing at Division-II Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania, the Estero graduate made a hole-in-one in her final hole of the Millersville Fall Invitational at the Berkleigh Golf Club on Tuesday.
“It was a pretty cool moment,” Reed said. “It was pretty surreal.”
The freshman, who made The News-Press All-Area First Team last year, said she was battling nerves ahead of the event.
“There’s obviously some nerves – it’s your first tournament,” Reed said. “And I think going in there, I had some confidence in my game. Played really well all summer, so I was excited to just be there and be with my team and have the opportunity to play. Not everyone gets to, so I was really excited.”
Reed was building her confidence during the second day of the tournament and got to her final hole – No. 15. It was a par-3, about 148 yards into the wind, she said. She used her 7 iron, which she had success with throughout the day.
“I hit it and it was going dead at the flag, and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a good shot,’” Reed said.
Fans around the hole began clapping and cheering – Reed thought it was because it landed close, but another golfer told her it went in the cup.
“I was in disbelief,” she said.
Reed’s coach recorded a video of her walking toward the cup to retrieve her ball. The stroke was her third hole-in-one and second this year, but it was the first time she achieved the feat in a tournament setting.
“I felt really happy,” Reed said. “I didn’t play well the first day. The first day was not a good day for me – lots of nerves and jitters. I was really happy to end off on a really good note, and it was pretty crazy to do that in my first ever tournament, so I was just really happy, and it made the tournament really feel worth it.”
