Florida State has had an illustrious quarterback history, with the likes of Chris Weinke, Charlie Ward, Jameis Winston, and Jordan Travis. In today’s contested market with the transfer portal, it’s become difficult to quantify how transfer quarterbacks are going to perform on a new team. That has not stopped ESPN’s Bill Connelly from ranking all 68 Power Four quarterbacks.
While CJ Carr of Notre Dame and the returning Julian Sayin of Ohio State lead the country in Connelly’s piece, Florida State’s own Ashton Daniels, originally from Auburn and Auburn, is placed at No. 38 out of 68. This places him in the top 55% of Power Four quarterbacks. While this may seem low, it is important to remember that Daniels’ tenure at Auburn was not Heisman-caliber, nor is it fair to say that a prior level of play will immediately carry over.
Per Connelly, Daniels has produced a QBR of over 70 in six different career starts. Daniels might be the favorite, but he will be competing against three other quarterbacks for the starting job, so the point about FSU could be moot if he loses out on the job.
He may be new to FSU, but he has plenty of experience from his time at Auburn and Stanford, playing in 37 career games. He has completed 60.2% of his passes for 4,783 yards, 24 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions. He has also run for 1,397 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Florida State opens its 2026 season against the New Mexico State Aggies on August 29 at Doak Campbell Stadium.
