Scottie Scheffler solidifies PGA Tour money lead despite another second

Scottie Scheffler still has the biggest wallet on the PGA Tour after the Travelers Championship’s Monday finish on June 29.

He also leads the Tour in runner-up finishes and hasn’t won since people still had Christmas decorations up.

Scheffler let a birdie putt attempt of less than 3 feet slide below the cup at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., on the first hole of sudden death, seconds after Viktor Hovland made a birdie putt of 6 feet, 7 inches. Hovland won his eighth PGA Tour title, a week after missing the cut in the U.S. Open.

Scheffler, who had made a series of clutch par putts in the final round, lost in a playoff for the second time this season. He has four seconds and eight finishes of fourth or higher since his only victory of the season on Jan. 25 at The American Express.

Scheffler earned $2.16 millon to increase his total to more than $15 million. Matt Fitzpatrick, who finished fourth at The Travelers, remains in second with a bit more than $13 million and Cameron Young, who tied for 47th, held onto third place.

The bottom part of the top 10 is reshuffled. Collin Morikawa, who was one shot out of the Hovland-Scheffler playoff, moved to fifth ahead of Rory McIlroy. Akshay Bhatia, who tied for fourth, moved up a spot to seventh with his tie for fourth.

Hovland jumped from 52nd to 12th and more than doubled his season total before last week with the $3.6 million winner’s check.
