A pilot was injured when his single-engine aircraft experienced a hard landing near the DeLand Municipal Airport on Thursday, July 3, police said.
The hard landing occurred in grassy area near Runway No. 5 around 10:07 a.m. at 955 Singleton Drive.
“The aircraft, a single piston over-wing model, experienced a hard landing resulting in moderate damage,” stated police spokeswoman Destiny Wiggins in a news release.
The pilot was able to get out of the aircraft before first responders arrived, and was quickly assisted by a nearby skydiver, who was also a paramedic, Wiggins said.
DeLand fire paramedics arrived on scene to assist, she said.
The pilot was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Wiggins said.
The crash is being investigated by Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board assisted by airport management and the DeLand Police Department, Wiggins said.
