A 78-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking to his mailbox in northeast Tallahassee Tuesday night.
The collision happened at about 5:50 p.m. at 10470 Veterans Memorial Highway in Leon County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
An FHP spokesperson said the pedestrian was struck by a woman driving southbound in a sedan. The circumstances of the accident were not immediately clear, though FHP said the man was crossing the street to his mailbox when the collision occurred.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, a 36-year-old Georgia woman, remained at the scene and the investigation is ongoing with investigators still working the scene.
There have been more than 3,000 crashes in Leon County with more than 1,900 injuries and at least 11 deaths on area roadways so far in 2026, according to the state’s Crash Dashboard online. Pedestrians have been struck by vehicles 138 times, and five of those have been fatal, including one from a hit-and-run.
The Florida Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by Leon County EMS, Leon County Sheriff’s Office, and LeonCounty Fire Rescue.
