A passenger in a pickup died after authorities said the driver failed to slow down, crashing into the back of a garbage truck.
The wreck happened 7:45 a.m. June 1 along State Road 29, near Janes Memorial Scenic Drive, near Copeland, according to a Florida Highway Patrol incident report.
Troopers said a 2018 GMC Terrain driven by a 40-year-old Immokalee man with a 39-year-old Immokalee man in the passenger’s seat was traveling south on State Road 29, approaching Janes Memorial Scenic Drive.
A garbage truck driven by a 40-year-old Naples man was traveling south on State Road 29 ahead of pickup and slowed to negotiate a right turn onto Janes Memorial Scenic Drive, according to troopers.
Troopers said the 40-year-old Immokalee man driving the pickup failed to slow down, rear-ending the garbage truck.
After the crash, troopers said, the pickup overturned.
Troopers said the pickup passenger suffered serious injuries, was taken to a local hospital and later died.
He is one of at least 17 fatalities resulting from Collier County crashes this year.
