Ormond woman crossing road in wheelchair struck and killed, FHP says

A 42-year-old woman in a wheelchair was hit and killed while trying to cross State Road 40 at night near Ormond Beach on March 16, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The accident occurred at S.R. 40 and Booth Road, according to FHP.

The Ormond Beach resident was using a non-motorized wheelchair and was not in a marked crossing zone when she attempted to cross the westbound lanes of S.R. 40 around 9:15 p.m., troopers said.

An investigation showed that as the woman tried to cross S.R. 40 from north to south, a 2020 Hyundai Tucson traveling west struck her, troopers said.

The woman was taken to AdventHealth Daytona where she was pronounced dead, troopers said.

The driver of the Hyundai Tucson, an 18-year-old Ormond Beach woman, and her passenger, a 19-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, were not injured. They remained at the scene of the accident, troopers said.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
