One person was killed and another injured in a two-vehicle crash the morning of April 24 in Marion County.
Here’s what we know:
Which agency is investigating the crash?
Florida Highway Patrol.
What vehicles were involved?
A Chrysler van and a Jeep Wrangler SUV.
What time was the incident?
James Lucas, spokesperson for Marion County Fire Rescue, said a crew was assigned to the crash at 8:58 a.m. and arrived at 9:10. The victim was pronounced dead at 9:11.
Where was the crash?
The 29000 block of East State Road 40, just west of State Road 19.
What happened?
Troopers said the van, driven by a 64-year-old woman from Orange City, was traveling westbound on State Road 40. The SUV, driven by a 65-year-old woman from Ocklawaha, was traveling eastbound on the same roadway.
Troopers said the van attempted to pass another westbound vehicle and entered the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with the SUV. FHP officials said the SUV’s engine compartment caught fire, though the driver was not burned.
The SUV driver was transported to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital with serious injuries. The 64-year-old van driver died at the scene, officials said.
It has been a deadly week for FHP, which has responded to four fatalities, including the April 24 crash. Three of the four deaths were women, according to FHP records.
The first crash occurred April 19, when a two-vehicle crash in Silver Springs Shores claimed the life of a 48-year-old woman. On April 22, two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash along State Road 40. One of the vehicles caught fire, and troopers are still working to identify that victim. The second victim was identified as a 43-year-old woman.
