New Smyrna Beach and South Daytona police are investigating a possible murder-suicide involving a 61-year-old New Smyrna Beach woman and her 62-year-old boyfriend, according to a joint statement.

New Smyrna Beach police officers Tuesday morning, July 22, responded “to a call from an out-of-state woman reporting a disturbing phone conversation” with a New Smyrna Beach woman she knows, according to a news release.
“According to the reporting party, the 61-year-old woman stated she had killed her boyfriend and intended to take her own life,” the release added.
While responding to the New Smyrna Beach residence, officers attempted to contact the woman, at which point police say she “died by suicide.”
No officers were injured during the incident.
New Smyrna Beach police then requested South Daytona Police to “conduct a welfare check at the residence of the man believed to be the woman’s boyfriend, located in that city.”
When South Daytona police officers responded to the man’s home, they found “a deceased 62-year-old male.”
New Smyrna Beach Police is heading the suicide investigation, while South Daytona Police is investigating the homicide, the release said.
“Both agencies are coordinating closely to determine the full scope and sequence of events,” officials added. “The identities of the deceased are being withheld at this time pending next-of-kin notification.”
