Diner lovers in West Palm Beach and beyond are still recovering from the gut punch news that Nick’s 50s Diner is on notice that it will have to relocate when its lease is up. The diner off Okeechobee Boulevard near Interstate 95 has been around for decades, serving up breakfast and lunchtime favorites often to a packed house.
The owner, who also was taken off guard when her landlord delivered the news, said she intends to relocate and has some time to contemplate the move. Let’s dig into some of the details:
How long has Nick’s 50s Diner been open?
The beloved diner was opened in 1986 by Nick Kelefas and was eventually taken over by his daughter Alyssa Cannon, who bought him out in 2011. No stranger to the diner, Cannon was working at Nick’s even as a little girl.
When does Nick’s 50s Diner have to leave?
Cannon said that her landlord let her know only a few weeks ago, but that she has until May 2028 when her lease expires to find a new home for the restaurant, her legions of loyal customers and beloved crew.
What’s Nick’s 50s Diner known for?
From their lauded tuna melts, meatloaf and burgers to their awesomely named specials like the Wake & Bake Quesadilla, Trashy Hashy, Morning Regret and Hangover Deluxe, Nick’s 50s Diner has an extensive menu that ranges from classics, to surf & turf and more.
What’s next for Nick’s 50s Diner?
Cannon said she’s working with a commercial broker to find the diner’s new home and is determined to stay in West Palm Beach. In addition to professional guidance, her customers have also been helping out. “I’ve had so many of my customers come to me with possible locations. It’s great because some of these places I never even thought of… it’s actually been like a community project so far trying to find our new home,” she said.
What’s Nick’s 50s Diner owner have to say?
Despite the challenge in finding that perfect place, Cannon said there’s no way she’s giving up. “I love what I do, I have no intention of retiring any time soon.” She said she hopes to eventually hand the business off to her daughter who’s currently in college studying business. “I’m doing it for me, but also for her. So she can carry the torch”
