One person was taken to a hospital and two cats were rescued after a fire gutted a New Smyrna Beach duplex on Wednesday, Dec. 17, according to the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department.
When firefighters arrived at 817 Maralyn Ave. about 8:30 a.m., they found flames coming from a two-story residential building, according to a social media post.
One person suffering from smoke inhalation was treated and transported to Halifax Health Medical Center, according to New Smyrna Beach Fire Department Lt. Adam Sarwi.
Sarwi said the cause of the fire was unknown but was under investigation and the state fire marshall had been called to assist.
Sarwi said about 20 to 25 firefighters responded and had the fire out “pretty quick.”
He described the building as a two-story duplex in a residential area.
Firefighters also rescued and treated two cats at the scene, according to the post.
