Two Plantation residents traveling in a Tesla died June 29 following a crash on Florida’s Turnpike that resulted in the roadway’s closure in both directions, according to the Florida Highway Patrol and officials.
Reported at 3:13 p.m., the crash happened just south of the Turnpike’s Palm City exit at Martin Downs Boulevard, and involved four vehicles, according to the FHP.
A 48-year-old man drove a 2026 Tesla south on the Turnpike. A 47-year-old woman and an 18-year-old woman were passengers, and all three were identified as Plantation residents, the FHP stated.
Meanwhile, a southbound truck-tractor with no trailer driven by a 42-year-old Gainesville man was behind the Tesla, and struck it.
The Tesla wound up going into the northbound lanes, and was struck on the right side by a semi-tractor trailer driven by a 55-year-old Orlando man, according to the FHP.
A pickup with a car hauler trailer driven by a 47-year-old Coconut Grove man then crashed with debris in the northbound lanes, the FHP stated.
The 48-year-old Tesla driver and the 18-year-old rear seat Tesla passenger were pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m.
The FHP did not identify the deceased.
The Turnpike’s northbound and southbound lanes were closed after the crash.
