St. John Neumann 3, Mariner 0: OB Osceola III picked a great time to turn in his best outing of the season.

The Florida State signee tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits and three walks with nine strikeouts to lead the Celtics (12-11) to a 3-0 win over Mariner (13-10) on senior night at Shea Maurer Field.

“It meant a lot, getting to walk the field with my dad and my sister,” Osceola said. “Senior night, been looking forward to it for a long time. I’m glad I got the start, and took advantage of it. I threw all seven, threw a CG. I felt good out there. It’s just coming to a close, so I’m glad that finally I got a good start in there. On the way up from here.

“My confidence is pretty high right now. I’ll go up against anyone in the country. My stuff’s there right now. I feel great. Having my team behind me, knowing that my defense is going to help me is a big confidence booster.”

Neumann methodically put pressure on throughout the night, but left 10 runners on base, the second most of the season. Despite that, the Celtics opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a Darien Kester single that plated Luke Parrish, who doubled in the prior at-bat.

“We’ve been really offensive all year,” Neumann coach Squeeze Maurer said. “When we throw strikes, we can be alright. We knew it was a matter of time we would get to them. A real windy night. The guys had to battle. We had to go to the short game, and the guys were guys at the end. The dudes were dudes. It’s good to get out of here with a win. Mariner’s coached really well, so it’s always good to get a win.”

In the sixth, Neumann got a pair of insurance runs, with Anthony Kanellos finding a way to plate Shaun Maradona on an error from Ryan Kotarski to make it 2-0, before Cole Travers laced a single to left field that plated Rowen Lee to go up 3-0 entering the final frame.

The Celtics will look to close out the regular season with one more win against St. John’s (D.C.), before district play commences next week. Neumann will be heavy favorites, vying for the No. 2 seed in Class 1A-Region 3 alongside Evangelical Christian. If the pitching consistency from Osceola translates into the postseason, the Celtics could be a tough out.

“He gutted it out,” Maurer said. “We’re at the point of the year where we’re starting to extend guys out. We’re pretty conservative early in the year on pitch count, so trying to let some of these guys extend out before the playoffs. His first pitch strike percentage was really good tonight. When he’s working ahead, he’s hard to beat. And that’s been the point of emphasis, and tonight you saw that, and he threw well.”
