Palm Beach County is not short of solid grocery stores: Publix, Aldi, Winn-Dixie, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Sprouts, Fresh Market, Plum Market.
But a new report has named one of them as the nation’s most trusted grocer in 2026.
That would be Aldi.
The discount grocery chain’s top ranking in Morning Consult’s 2026 “Most Trusted Brands” report comes amid heightened concerns among U.S. consumers over inflation and grocery prices, which were already high at the start of the year, but have risen even more since the Iran war began in late February.
Aldi is the nation’s fastest-growing grocer and fourth-largest grocery chain in Florida with 315 stores as of June 30, with 18 in Palm Beach County.
Having added 30 stores in the Sunshine State since the start of the year, Aldi plans to open more in the coming months. Earlier this year, the owner of the Palm Coast Plaza along South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach submitted city paperwork to start the process of bringing an Aldi to the site.
How was the ranking for most trusted grocer determined?
Morning Consult is a Washington, D.C.-based “global decision intelligence and market research company” that conducted several national surveys between Jan. 1 and May 15 to gauge consumers’ views of more than 3,200 brands for everything from airlines and apparel to food and household products, consumer electronics, hotels and streaming and video services.
“Trust is one of the most reliable signals of overall brand health we measure,” the report stated. “Brands that earn it tend to be favored, valued, admired, and considered.”
The report stated that Morning Consult has been tracking consumer trust in nearly 600 brands continuously since 2018. “The average net trust score across these brands stands at 27.1 in 2026 — the highest point in the nine-year series. That stability is striking given the period in question.
“Americans have lived through a pandemic, a wave of social movements, an upheaval in news delivery, persistent inflation, and a steady erosion of confidence in major institutions. Against that backdrop, the fact that trust in consumer brands has not just held, but slowly improved is notable.”
What is Aldi?
Aldi is a German-based discount grocery chain that opened its first store in the United States in Iowa City, Iowa, in 1976.
The chain opened its first stores in Florida in September 2008.
Aldi added 60 stores in Florida in 2025 and has opened another 30 through the first half of 2026 amid plans to grow to 3,200 stores across the country by the end of 2028, up from approximately 2,200 to 2,300 at the start of 2023. It had just over 200 stores in Florida at the beginning of that year.
The chain is owned by members of the same family in Germany that also owns the popular California-based upscale grocer Trader Joe’s, but the two chains are not in any way affiliated, in large part because of a falling out in the early 1960s between the two brothers that started Aldi.
Still, both Aldi and Trader Joe’s share the same strategy of emphasizing private label products that are only available in the respective chains’ stores that allows them to be extremely competitively priced compared to traditional grocers.
More Florida consumers are giving Aldi a try because of its low prices
While some Florida consumers were reluctant to embrace Aldi when it first expanded to the Sunshine State because of its heavy emphasis on private label products over recognizable national name brands, several interviewed by USA TODAY NETWORK-FLORIDA have said they decided to give the chain a try in recent years.
Tim Frawley of Fort Lauderdale in an email in February wrote that he and his wife made the switch from Publix, Florida’s largest grocery chain, to Aldi because of rising prices.
“We were hesitant at first to shop at Aldi’s (but) we eat salmon frequently,” he wrote. “Publix went sky high price-wise around COVID time. We tried the salmon at Aldi’s, and lo and behold, it was good! Then we discovered the bread. … Many of the Aldi’s products are European. That’s pretty cool.”
Even so, Frawley said he and his wife also continue to do some of their grocery shopping at Publix because of its BOGO (buy one, get one free) specials and because they consider the Lakeland-based traditional grocery chain’s meats to be superior overall.
“Aldi’s meat, I don’t recommend, although I have bought the pork loins and they are excellent,” he wrote.
