Mike Norvell is excited to see this FSU freshman 'compete' against Alabama

The FSU Seminoles revealed their depth chart for their Week 1 matchup with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Monday, and while seven freshmen are listed on the two-deep, wide receiver Jayvan Boggs was the only one to get the nod as a starter.

It is a special honor for Boggs, who is one of the three starting wide receivers alongside transfers Duce Robinson and Squirrel White. Boggs has impressed throughout camp, and head coach Mike Norvell believes he has “earned the opportunity” to start.

“Most freshmen that come in, they all want to play, and they’ll say it,” Norvell said. “They’ll sound good. Some of them have the ability and talent, but it just also carries over into the mindset, carries over into making sure that you know what to do, how to do it, and then the consistency of being where you need to be and being able to execute when your number is called.

“I think Jayvan has done a really nice job of putting himself in that position, and I’m excited to see him go compete on game day.”

Boggs was one of the most productive players in high school last season, catching 99 passes for 2,133 yards and 24 touchdowns as he helped lead Cocoa to a state championship. He was at his best in the biggest moments, catching an absurd 17 passes for 378 yards and three touchdowns in the semifinals to set the Florida single-game receiving yards record.

That production and the polish he displayed are why many expected him to make an immediate impact for the Seminoles, something he has put himself in line to do.

Boggs and the rest of the Seminoles will open the season on Aug. 30 against Alabama in Doak Campbell Stadium. The game is set to start at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be on ABC.
