Miami baseball isn’t exactly coming into the ACC tournament on a high note. But there’s still time for the Hurricanes to get hot before the NCAA selection show and kick off another run to the College World Series.
The Hurricanes closed the regular season by dropping the first two of a three-game set at rival Florida State, a flub that included a blown five-run lead and a run-rule romp the day after. UM had a chance to sneak into the conference’s top four and secure a double bye to the quarterfinals; instead they’re the No. 5 seed, opening tournament play today against Stanford with a 36-17 record (16-14 in ACC play).
Despite a 3-5 end to the regular season, Miami isn’t in danger of missing the NCAA tournament, but they’ll need to overcome two lingering issues. One can’t be helped: All-ACC third baseman Daniel Cuvet has missed the past 12 games with a back injury. The offense has managed just fine in his absence, averaging nearly seven runs per game behind Derek Williams and Alex Sosa. But the bullpen remains a major concern, surrendering 16 runs in 10⅔ innings against FSU.
Miami will open against Stanford (28-25, 13-17), which advanced past the first round by beating rival Cal 11-4 on Tuesday. The ‘Canes took two of three at Stanford in mid-April. If they win, the season’s surprise Boston College awaits in the quarterfinals; the Eagles won the series in Coral Gables in early March.
Here’s what to know about UM’s potential path through the ACC baseball tournament bracket, including how to watch the games on TV and streaming.
