McKeel, Lake Wales, Lakeland Christian advance to the regional semis

THE LEDGER — It was a night of lop-sided first round for Polk County teams in the first round of the playoffs, and McKeel made short work of Tenoroc.

McKeel combined six hits with eight walks and five Tenoroc errors to run away with a 15-0 victory in the Class 3A, Region 3 quarterfinals.

McKeel (15-5), the No. 1 seed in the region, will play Lemon Bay at 7 p.m. in the semifinals on Tuesday.

McKeel scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to clinch the victory. Isabelle Morrell, who went 1 for 3 with three RBIs, drove in the first run. Madyson Marion singled home two runs, and Erikah Ramos scored on an error. Marion, who went 2 for 3, was the only hitter with more than one hit. 

Mikayla Jackson drove in two runs and finished 1 for 3. Kamryn Scobeys double was the only extra-base hit.

Pitcher Chloe Lanier allowed just one hit and struck out nine in three innings. Chloe Witmer retired all three batters she faced and struck out one.

4A-2: Lake Wales romps; Lake Region falls late

Lake Wales piled up 11 hits and two advantage of 10 Citrus errors en route to a 17-2 victory over Citrus on Wednesday in the Class 4A, Region 2 quarterfinals.

Kiera Davis had two doubles and finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Paiten Dunaway had two hits and two RBIs, Kyra Williams had a pair of hits and drove in one run, and Mattie Cockrell went 1 for 3 with two RBIs to lead the attack.

Zamirya McBurrows allowed one run on four hits in four innings with five strikeouts and three walks.

Lake Wales (22-6) will play in the regional semifinals at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, but it won’t be a rematch against Lake Region. Instead, Satellite will travel to Lake Wales after upsetting No. 3 Lake Region, 6-5.

Lake Region took a 5-3 lead into the top of the seventh, but Satellite rallied for three runs.

The Thunder appeared to be on their way to clinching the win after retiring the first two batters. Halie Veon and Isabella Barrera began the rally with back-to-back, two-out singles. Errors and passed balls allowed the three runs to score.

Brittneay Sowell singled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but Satellite then retired the next three batters with Sowell left stranded on third base.

Kaydence McCarty went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, and Kailyn Reeder drove in two runs.

1A-2: Lakeland Christian routs Cambridge Christian

Paityn Donalson went 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead the Lakeland’s Christian’s 16-hit attack in a 15-0 victory over Cambridge Christian in the 1A-2 regional quarterfinals.

Parker Ray had three hits with two RBIs, and Allie Williams and Emerson Tyler head had two hits with two RBIs.

LCS (19-8) will play No. 6-seed Mount Dora Christian in the regional semifinals on Tuesday.
