The Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Joshua Caleb Carpenter, 31, of Lakeland attemped to cross the highway on the scooter in or near a crosswalk and was struck by a 2000 Toyota Avalon driven west by Andrew Almaraz, 60, of Winter Haven.

The Sheriff’s Office said the preliminary investigation showed that Almaraz had a green light and was traveling at a proper speed.

Carpenter was dead when first responders arrived, the Sheriff’s Office said. Almaraz was not injured and cooperated fully with the investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office said Carpenter was wearing dark clothing and had no helmet.

The westbound lanes of U.S. 92 were closed for about four hours. The Sheriff’s Office said no criminal or civil charges are anticipated at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
