Jacksonville police said one man died and another was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries when gunfire erupted at a large gathering in a Northwest Jacksonville neighborhood.
The double shooting happened about 1 a.m. Sunday, June 28, in the 1700 block of West 11th Street between Grunthal and Fairfax streets, Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Steve Rudlaff said. Dispatch received several 911 calls about the shooting. The men, both 20 to 30 years old, have not been identified.
“What we currently know is that there was a large group of individuals hanging out when the shooting occurred,” Rudlaff said. “By the time officers arrived on scene, a majority of those individuals had already left the area.”
No other details were released about what may have led up to the shooting or a description of who fired.
Times-Union records show this was 39th homicide in Jacksonville this year. That compares to 56 at the same time in 2025, which culminated in 115 total killings.
The double shooting occurred about a quarter mile from a March 14 fatal shooting. At that time, the Sheriff’s Office found a 46-year-old man dead with at least one gunshot wound inside an abandoned property at 1700 W. 12th St. between Myrtle Avenue and Fairfax Street.
The West 11th Street shooting was the most recent at unrelated street parties and other large gatherings in Jacksonville. Here are the summaries from the Sheriff’s Office.
On June 14, a 16-year-old boy and three adults were shot at a Sherwood Forest pop-up party. All four were hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds following the quadruple shooting.
On Feb. 22, four people were injured during a quadruple shooting at a street party in the area of Jessie Street and A. Philip Randolph Boulevard on the Eastside near downtown. All four victims — two women and two men — had been shot at least once but were in stable condition.
On Feb. 21, four juveniles and an adult were hurt in shootings in the area of Beach Boulevard and Second Street as the Community First SeaWalk Music Festival was happening nearby at the SeaWalk Pavilion. Jacksonville Beach police said a group of people started fighting during a “takeover event” and gunfire erupted. None of the injuries was deemed life-threatening.
