Man dies after falling from golf cart; wife arrested

PORT ST. LUCIE – A 59-year-old man died after falling from a golf cart driven June 28 by his wife, who was arrested on a DUI charge, according to Port St. Lucie Police on June 30.

Daniel Mackin died following the weekend incident in western Port St. Lucie that resulted in the arrest of his wife, Cynthia Mackin, 62, said Sgt. Dominick Mesiti, police spokesperson. Police reported the Mackins are residents of Greensboro, Georgia.

Mesiti said police about 5:20 p.m. June 28 went to Shinnecock and Astor Creek drives east of Glades Cut Off Road.

Mesiti said Daniel Mackin reportedly stood on the back of the golf cart as his wife drove.

“He fell off the back of the golf cart and struck his head,” Mesiti said. “They were on a sidewalk going to another … location on the golf course.”

Daniel Mackin was taken to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce where he died, Mesiti said.

Cynthia Mackin had a blood alcohol content of 0.09, which is greater than the legal limit of 0.08, according to police. She was jailed on a DUI charge.

Mesiti said the investigation is continuing and police are consulting with the State Attorney’s Office “to see what the appropriate charge, if any further charge, is warranted.”

Mesiti said a second person, Justis Morrison, 37, of Jupiter, also was arrested.

Mesiti said as officers conducted the crash investigation, Morrison “continued to interfere with the investigation, yelling at the officers and telling the wife to not cooperate with the investigation, and he was placed under arrest for obstruction.”

It’s not the first fatal golf cart incident in Port St. Lucie after which an arrest occurred.

In April 2022, John Scott Hehr, of Spring, Texas, was arrested by Port St. Lucie police following an incident at the Floridian National Golf Club, according to records and police.

Hehr was driving a golf cart and passenger Christopher Edward Cipra, 34, of Houston, Texas, fell off and died.

Hehr was arrested on a felony DUI manslaughter charge, but a prosecutor later reported filing a lesser misdemeanor DUI charge.

Hehr pleaded no contest in October 2022 to the DUI charge, court records show.

Cynthia Mackin and Morrison were released June 29 from the St. Lucie County Jail, each on $500 bond, according to the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.
