ORLANDO — Al Hilal produced the FIFA Club World Cup’s biggest shock to date, emerging victorious in a seven-goal, extra-time thriller against Premier League giant Manchester City.
Marcos Leonardo bundled in the winner in the 112th minute, his second goal of the game, to send the Saudi Pro League side to the quarterfinal round with a 4-3 win at Camping World Stadium. Al Hilal will stay in Orlando and face Fluminense at 3 p.m. Friday in an unexpected quarterfinal pairing.
Fluminense dispatched UEFA Champions League runner-up Inter Milan in a 2-0 result in Charlotte, North Carolina, earlier Monday.
Al Hilal flipped the script after halftime, trailing after just nine minutes on a scruffy finish from Bernardo Silva. Marcos Leonardo knocked in an equalizer 44 seconds after the restart, and Malcom put Al Hilal ahead a lightning-fast counterattack following a Man City corner.

Erling Haaland seemingly restored order three minutes after Malcom’s goal, sweeping in a second ball off Silva’s swinging corner. Manchester City outshot Al Hilal 31-17, forcing Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou into nine saves.
Al Hilal survived a handful of Man City close calls in the final 10 minutes of regulation. Bounou palmed Rúben Dias’ long-range effort over the bar moments after stretching to deny Haaland at the goal line.
Four minutes into extra time, two former Premier League stars connected on a corner for Al Hilal. Rúben Neves delivered an accurate inswinger, and Kalidou Koulibaly rose between two Manchester City defenders to thump home a header.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola made a tactical switch at the 100-minute mark, pulling defensive midfielder Rodri for attacking mid Phil Foden. The 25-year-old England international produced an immediate impact, poking Rayan Cherki’s lofted pass across Bounou for his 100th goal for the club.
But Al Hilal regained the lead for a third, final time seven minutes into the second extra period. Renan Lodi collected the ball just outside the penalty area and whipped a cross onto the head of Sergej Milinković-Savić. Ederson stretched to make the initial save, but Marcos Leonardo was able to chest down the rebound and curl it over the line.

The restart was delayed more than three minutes as Al Hilal sought an overturn. Following a VAR review, the ruling on the field stood.
