Maclay School's longtime headmaster Bill Jablon dies at 78

Maclay School’s longtime former headmaster Bill Jablon, 78, died on Monday, May 26, after a short illness, the school announced on Thursday, May 29.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bill Jablon, beloved Headmaster of Maclay School, who faithfully served our community for 45 years, 38 as Headmaster (1976-2014). Bill was a pillar of leadership, vision, and integrity whose legacy will forever be etched into the foundation of our school and in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.”

The press release went on to detail Jablon’s long career at the private school.

Jablon joined Maclay School in 1969, initially as a teacher, but quickly rose to leadership, becoming Headmaster in 1976. Over nearly four decades, he guided Maclay through an era of unprecedented growth and transformation. Under his leadership, Maclay expanded its academic programs, developed its campus infrastructure, and strengthened its commitment to student excellence and character.

He was instrumental in establishing the Upper School, creating a strong college preparatory curriculum, and fostering a culture of high expectations balanced by compassion and mentorship.

During his tenure, Maclay earned its accreditation from the Florida Council of Independent Schools and achieved national recognition for academic distinction. Jablon oversaw the construction of several landmark facilities, including the Cartee Gymnasium, Dining Hall, Belin Middle School and Webster Convocation and Athletics Center.

Jablon was known for his calm wisdom, steady leadership, and care for every member of the Maclay family. He greeted students by name, mentored young teachers, and led with humility and grace. A man of principle and vision, he never sought recognition, yet he received many accolades throughout his career.

He was honored with the FCIS Lifetime Achievement Award and the Southern Association of Independent Schools’ Leadership Service Award. His influence extended beyond our campus, as he served on regional education boards and was a respected voice in independent school leadership across the Southeast.

Even in retirement, Jablon remained a trusted advisor, devoted alumni supporter, and a frequent presence oncampus. He loved seeing former students return with families of their own and took great joy in the continuedsuccess of the school he helped build.

A mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church followed by a receptionfor family and friends at the Robert C. Webster Athletics and Convocation Center at Maclay School wherewe will celebrate Bill’s remarkable life and legacy. All are welcome to attend and share in the remembrance of aman whose dedication shaped the future of thousands.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Bill’s family and loved ones. His passing is a profound loss, but hislegacy will continue to inspire and guide Maclay School for generations to come. Bill Jablon was, and willalways be, the heart of Maclay,” the school’s release said.
