Football fans finally get their first glimpse of the new-look Jacksonville Jaguars this weekend when the team plays a practice game at EverBank Stadium, but that’s hardly the only fun thing going on around Jacksonville.
There’s also the return of a music venue that’s been shut down for more than a year, a rocking country concert in St. Augustine, an opportunity to drink beer with the St. Johns Riverkeeper and a visit from a Starfleet legend.
Stadium scrimmage
5:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at EverBank Stadium. Free.
The Jaguars are playing a practice game against themselves as they get ready for the upcoming NFL season. Fans will get a chance to see how the new coaches are working out, how the team is coming into shape and whether Travis Hunter plays on offense, defense or both. The event is free, but you need to register at jaguars.com/trainingcamp to secure a ticket. The team also has open training camp sessions Aug. 3 and 5, and a preseason game with Pittsburgh on Aug. 9. Dan Tyminski Band
8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. $70-$115.
The big news isn’t that Dan Tyminski is playing at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, it’s that anybody is playing at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, which has been undergoing renovations for 15 months. Tyminski played guitar and mandolin with Alison Krauss and Union Station for years, and that’s his voice you hear when George Clooney lip-syncs to “Man of Constant Sorrow” in “O, Brother, Where Art Thou.” Info: pvconcerthall.com
Brad Paisley
7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. $59-$128.
Got a friend who hates country music? Take ‘em to this show and you might just change their mind. Paisley is a darned fine guitar player (just watch him tear through Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher”) and one of the smartest songwriters in the business. Info: theamp.com
25 Taps for the St. Johns Celebration
2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at Intuition Ale Works. $15.
Local breweries have been helping the St. Johns Riverkeeper celebrate its 25th anniversary all summer, and many will be on hand with samples. Info: stjohnsriverkeeper.org.
William Shatner
6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3, at the Thrasher-Horne Center, Orange Park. $48-$124.
Capt. James Tiberius Kirk himself will be on hand for a screening of “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,” then he’ll take questions from the audience. Info: thcenter.org
