Legendary Dolphins RB reveals eye-popping fact about his best season

The Miami Dolphins have had some great running backs throughout their history, but the only one to ever lead the league in rushing yards was Ricky Williams, who accomplished that feat in 2002.

That year, Williams rushed for 1,853 yards and 16 touchdowns on his way to his lone Pro Bowl in his 11 years spent between the Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens.

Speaking to former NFL head coach Jon Gruden on a podcast, Williams recently revealed an incredible fact about his 2002 campaign.

“So Norv Turner was offensive coordinator my first year in Miami, and he loves gap scheme, and that’s that’s my thing,” Williams said. “We figured out, he had a play called, it was inside zone scissors, and when I led the NFL in rushing, I probably had 75% of my yards off of that one play because he realized that if you zone block and you give me space and put a little misdirection it’s going to be really hard for those defensive guys to get me. So, we ran it over and over. There was that, inside zone and gap scheme, and (we) tore up the league doing it.”

That 2002 season was also Williams’ most efficient year, as he averaged 4.8 yards per carry. The only other year he had above 4.3 was in 2009 when he rushed for 1,121 yards and 11 touchdowns on 4.7 yards per attempt in Miami.

For Williams to be that successful on essentially one play, that’s special.
