Jaguars' Brian Thomas received votes among execs, coaches in WR rankings

Jacksonville Jaguars’ wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. was briefly mentioned in Jeremy Fowler’s annual wide receiver rankings.

What makes Fowler’s rankings unique is that they are constructed with the input of 70 NFL execs, coaches, and scouts as the voters. Other elements, such as research, interviews, and film analysis by Matt Bowen, factor in as well.

With all that taken into account, Fowler then compiles the top 10, highlights a few honorable mentions, and notes which players received votes.

Thomas appeared in the ‘receiving votes’ category, meaning that of the 70 voters who put their top 10 lists together, at least one had Thomas in the top 10.

After a very impressive rookie year, Thomas’ production fell off last season, as totaling just 707 receiving yards on 72 receptions. Missed time and navigating injuries didn’t help, but there was inconsistency as well.

But this year, Thomas has put together a strong showing during offseason programs, and he will look to carry that momentum forward.

SI’s Albert Breer noted that Thomas Jr. has been fully healthy, which of course, is important. That, coupled with improved chemistry with Trevor Lawrence, has resulted in a lot of plays being made on the practice field.

ESPN’s Michael DiRocco called Thomas Jr. the “most impressive offensive player” during offseason programs, with he and Trevor Lawrence routinely connecting on downfield throws.

In Liam Coen’s offense, where the ball is often spread around based on matchups and in-game situations, having a true WR1 isn’t a must in this system. But where Thomas can thrive is as a vertical threat, with Jakobi Meyers handing the over the middle and intermediate routes.

A bounce-back year from Thomas will not only lead to more production in the passing game and explosive plays generated, but with the attention he can command from opposing defenders, that will also help create opportunities for other Jaguars’ pass-catchers.
