How did NFL draft begin? A tale sure to make you smirk
The NFL draft was the brainchild of Bert Bell, co-owner of the Philadelphia Eagles, who proposed the annual event to ensure that every franchise remained financially viable. His proposal was unanimously accepted.
On Feb. 8, 1936, Philadelphia’s Ritz-Carlton Hotel hosted the first NFL draft, with clubs selecting from a pool of 90 players. ESPN wasn’t on hand – of course, there was no ESPN back then, nor were there formal scouting departments, agents or the type of media coverage we know today.
Bell’s Eagles had the first pick, using it on halfback Jay Berwanger, the Heisman winner from the University of Chicago. But Berwanger decided not to play professional football. In fact, 57 of the 81 players selected didn’t sign.
What did Berwanger do instead?
He opted for something considered more stable.
He became a foam rubber salesman.
