The Volusia Sheriff’s Office arsenal of equipment includes armored vehicles, high-powered weapons, and over $19 million worth of helicopters, among thousands of other items.
The News-Journal obtained, through public records requests, two capital asset reports from 2024 and 2025 from the sheriff’s office. The 2025 report lists 8,279 items originally worth $86.1 million.
The records request was for a list of capital assets and tracked assets currently owned by the sheriff’s office. The agency’s General Orders Manual defines capital assets as property worth $1,000 or more that is expected to last over a year. Tracked assets are property worth less than $1,000, which the sheriff’s office deems of value for tracking purposes.
Categories include boats, trailers, guns, cars, armored vehicles and more.
Here are 10 items from that list, including some of the most expensive pieces of equipment.
1. Volusia Sheriff’s Office Air One
The sheriff’s office Air One unit operates three Bell 407 helicopters, each with a top speed of 160 mph. They can get anywhere in the county in 10 minutes if they’re already in the air. They cost about $19.6 million combined.
2. Mobile command center
A mobile command center originally bought for $531,529 is on the report. A mobile command center can be seen at big events and some major incidents.
3. Volusia Sheriff’s Office weapons include a .50 caliber rifle
The weapons belonging to the sheriff’s office include 40 machine guns and submachine guns. There’s also a $10,578 military-grade Barrett .50-caliber rifle, which is strong enough to stop vehicles, a law enforcement expert told the News-Journal.
4. 33-foot Life Proof Boats vessel on the list
The sheriff’s office has several marine vessels. The most expensive is a 33-foot Life Proof Boat, bought in 2023 for $448,997.
5. A BearCat armored vehicle
A BearCat is a popular type of armored vehicle used by law enforcement. The sheriff’s office acquired one for $337,650 in 2022.
Chitwood said in 2020 that BearCats can be used in hostage situations and other dangerous operations. They can also be used to help rescue residents during flooding.
