A juvenile female was shot in the chest on Friday, June 19, in an incident in Northwest Jacksonville, police said.
At about 8:25 p.m., officers responded to 5600 Benedict Road after reports of a person being shot, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in an early morning news release. They found the girl with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police say the incident occurred while the victim, a juvenile male suspect and several witnesses were hanging out in the area of Benedict Road and Moncrief Road. The suspect allegedly pulled a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the victim before shooting her in the chest. Officers canvassed the area and found the firearm.
The suspect remained at the scene and was taken into custody, police said in the news release.
Crime scene detectives were processing the area for evidence early Saturday, and the Robbery and Violent Crime Unit was actively searching for surveillance video and following up on investigative leads.
