A brief history of The Daytona Beach News-Journal
The newspaper that would grow into The Daytona Beach News-Journal was first published on Feb. 15, 1883. Volume 1, No. 1, of the weekly Halifax Journal was printed on floral-bordered cotton cloth because the schooner carrying its first shipment of newsprint sank off the Carolina coast.
Florian Mann, the owner, publisher, editor and printer, promised that this new publication would be “nonpartisan in politics, independent in all things, and neutral in nothing which concerns the interests of the people.”
Mann sold the newspaper but later returned to Daytona, where he started a second newspaper, the Daytona News, a newspaper that would, a few owners later, merge with the Halifax Journal (which had been renamed The Daytona Journal and then the Daytona Beach Journal in 1926) to form the Daytona Beach News-Journal in 1927.
The owner of the merged newspaper, Indiana newspaper magnate Eugene C. Pulliam, had incorporated the News-Journal Corporation in 1925 after buying the majority interest in the two newspapers from Thomas E. Fitzgerald.
Pullian sold his share in the company in 1928 to Julius Davidson and Julius’ son, Herbert M. Davidson. The Davidson family owned and operated the News-Journal newspapers for more than 80 years, until 2009.

Who owns The Daytona Beach News-Journal?
