FSU transfer commit says FSU 'felt like home'

The FSU baseball team landed its first transfer pitcher of the offseason this week, adding former FAU Owl Trey Beard. He is their second commitment of the offseason, joining infielder Eli Putnam.

Beard, who is from Dunedin, Florida, is coming off a breakout season with the Owls. The lefty made the First-Team All-AAC after finishing with a 3.14 ERA in 86 innings, striking out 118 batters. He held opponents to a .199 batting average and issued 32 walks.

He spoke with The Osceola’s Curt Weiler about why he committed to Link Jarrett and the Seminoles, and he admitted that Tallahassee “felt like home.”

“I loved FAU,” he said. “They gave me a chance to throw right away out of high school. I loved the coaches, I loved the players, and I grew a really good relationship with our pitching coach (Jordan) Tabakman. After this year, I got word of him leaving and I guess it just felt like it was time for me to move on as well. I grew up a Florida State fan. My sister, my cousin, a lot of family friends went there. It just felt like home. Especially my talks with (FSU pitching coach Micah) Posey and (head coach Link) Jarrett, it just felt very natural for me to go there. I’m really excited about my decision and I’m really excited to go up there in the fall and get after it.”

He will be working closely with FSU pitching coach Micah Posey to try and take another step, and he knows exactly what he wants to work on and what Posey likes.

“He obviously likes my fastball, my changeup,” he said. “He likes my breaking balls as well. He just said we can definitely clean some of the breaking pitches up and get into my body more. Learning how to use my body better, getting into better spots, he said he can really help me out with that and I’m really excited to get to work with him.”
