The Florida State football team has two established wide receivers in Duce Robinson and Micahi Danzy, but the Seminoles need several players to step up behind them. One of the players who appears to be doing that is true freshman wide receiver Jasen Lopez.
The two-sport player has frequently been praised by the coaching staff during his first fall camp, with both offensive coordinator Tim Harris Jr. and defensive coordinator Tony White doing so on Wednesday.
Harris, who is also the wide receivers coach, pointed to his competitiveness as what separated him from the other freshmen on the roster and has him poised to be an early contributor for the Seminoles. Something Mike Norvell has also said he believes he can do.
“He comes from a very, very competitive environment,” Harris said. “He’s always been a kid that’s played in tough environments his entire life. He’s been challenged a lot, you know, and a two-sport guy, he’s done it.
“You watch him every day. You just continue to see steps, the steps that you want to see guys take when they tell you they want to play as a freshman. He’s continued to show growth every day, and that’s put himself in a good position where, you know, he’ll have a good chance of doing that.”
Lopez spent his high school career at Chaminade-Madonna Prep, which frequently matched him up with other elite players. He consistently produced at a high level, finishing with 313 receptions for 5,211 yards and 59 touchdowns, having at least 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in all four years.
White has been so impressed with Lopez’s athleticism and playmaking ability that he has attempted to get him to play defense, something that Harris would likely not be a fan of.
“J-Rock, I’ve always been a fan of the best athlete on the field,” White explained. “He’s that guy. He’s that, I mean, twitchy, coordinated, like instinctive.
“You see that stuff on the field now? Like, I mean, whether he’s returning punts, his slot, you know, the double moving, like catch a damn screen and make three guys miss. Like he’s electric, man. He’s really electric”
