FSU baseball sweeps doubleheader vs. Pitt

The No. 12 Florida State Seminoles swept Saturday’s doubleheader against the Pitt Panthers on Saturday at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida. They improved to 33-14 overall and 15-9 in ACC play with the wins.

While they dominated the first game of the doubleheader, the second game was a battle with the Seminoles hanging on to get the win and secure the series. Here is how they won both games.

Game 1: FSU 10, Pitt 1

Wes Mendes was sensational to start the day, throwing a complete game to earn the win. He allowed just one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. He did not walk a batter, but did hit one.

FSU’s offense gave him some early run support, putting up four runs in the second inning to take control. Nathan Cmeyla started the inning with a single before Gabe Fraser walked and Eli Putnam advanced them both with a sacrifice bunt.

An error on a ball hit by Cal Fisher allowed both runners to score and Fisher to reach safely. John Stuetzer capped the inning off with a two-run homer, his sixth of the season.

Pitt got on the board in the fourth with a leadoff home run. It was their only extra-base hit of the game, and Mendes ended the inning with two strikeouts.

The Seminoles pulled away in the sixth inning with six runs. Cmeyla and Fraser once again reached before Cmeyla scored on an error on a hit by Fisher, who reached second on the play. Fraser got to third and did the rest by himself, getting a big secondary lead and stealing home when the catcher threw it back to third.

Stuetzer kept it going with a double before Brody DeLamielleure singled him home and Hunter Carns drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, putting FSU up 10-1.

Game 2: FSU 8, Pitt 5

FSU once again took an early lead, but this time they had to fight to hold onto it as Pitt’s offense woke up.

Brody DeLamielleure hit a one-out single in the first inning before Hunter Carns put two runners in scoring position with a double. Nathan Cmeyla gave them a 1-0 lead on an error before Gabe Fraser made it 3-0 with a single. They grew the lead to 5-0 in the second when Carter McCulley singled home Cal Fisher and came around to score on a wild pitch.

Pitt responded in the third inning, scoring four runs off Trey Beard. They hit a leadoff homer in the inning and a three-run shot after two singles. Beard and John Abraham settled in after that, not allowing another run until the ninth. They finished the game with nine hits, but were 2-15 with runners on.

Beard got some breathing room in the fifth when Carns and Cmeyla hit back-to-back home runs, making it a 7-4 game. They went 8-4 in the seventh when Cmeyla drove in another run with a fielder’s choice. Pitt got one run back in the ninth with a solo home run, but Abrams struckout the next two batters to end the game.

FSU will go for the series sweep on Sunday against Pitt. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
