“Glide past lush landscapes, spot local wildlife, and enjoy the serenity of Sumter County’s great outdoors,  all at no cost,” the county’s website says.

Sumter County residents can check out one canoe and up to two paddles and life jackets for free at Sumter Public Library’s Lake Panasoffkee and Pinellas Plaza locations.

A key will be provided to adults upon checkout to unlock the canoes stationed at the following parks:

“This investment is intended to enhance the overall experience on the water and to encourage greater public use and appreciation of our local waterways,” said Freddie Fudge, Sumter County’s facilities and parks manager, in a news release.

To successfully check out the equipment, residents must be 18 years or older and have a Sumter County Public Library Card in good standing.

The canoes can not be reserved in advance and must stay in Sumter County parks and waterways. Lost or damaged items will be billed to the user’s account.

“We want to invite all residents to join us in celebrating the vast impact our parks have on the health and well-being of the community,” the county’s spokesperson said.

“These are more than just green spaces; they provide exceptional opportunities for people to breathe, play, gather, and reconnect with nature. We encourage everyone to take advantage of their free time by making unforgettable memories out on the water with our new canoes.”
