Former Florida State football quarterback Tommy Castellanos is reportedly seeking a return to college football after a Colorado judge issued a preliminary injunction that allows Class of 2022 recruits an additional year of eligibility.
The news about Castellanos was first reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. It comes after Colorado Judge Charlotte Sweeney issued a preliminary injunction in the US District Court of Colorado on July 31, first reported by Sam Ehrlich.
Her ruling is in response to the NCAA Division I Cabinet’s passing of a new 5-for-5 eligibility model in June, which granted players who graduated high school in or after 2023 five years to play five seasons of collegiate athletics. Sweeney ruled that the NCAA’s decision caused “irreparable harm” to athletes in the class of 2022, who were only given four seasons of eligibility.
This isn’t Castellanos’ first attempt at getting an additional year of eligibility. The former signal-caller failed to obtain a waiver from the NCAA after the end of the 2025 season. According to the report from Nakos, Castellanos’ agent said multiple schools have expressed interest, and Castellanos is open to returning as a quarterback or athlete.
Castellanos went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, but he did attend NFL minicamps as a wide receiver. He threw for 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions while adding 557 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in his lone season with FSU.
A return to Tallahassee seems unlikely with the Seminoles set at quarterback, but Castellanos could sign elsewhere if the preliminary injunction is upheld.
Sweeny’s ruling will almost certainly be challenged by the NCAA, which could end the hopes of returning for athletes in the Class of 2022, like Castellanos.
